Friends of Scouting
Michelle Chapman, Diamondback District Executive, and Mr Lynch discussed the importance of supporting the Alamo Area Council's efforts to ensure all youth in the Council can participate in Scouting if they wish. For families who cannot afford to pay for their son or daughter to be in scouting, and there are many in the 13 counties of Alamo Area Council, it cost the council $250 per year per youth.
So that is Council's suggested donation.
Crew 285 suggests that, if you can, please donate $285 to this worthy cause, to highlight Crew 285 and Troop 285 participation.
Here is a link to the donation page on the Council web site.

Special Presentation: Major Jonathan Letterman, Medical Director of the Army of the Potomac
Mr. Scott "Woody" Woodard attended our meeting tonight along with his assistant Karl to give us an interpretive presentation on the state of medical affairs during the US Civil War a.k.a. The War of Northern Aggression (that's what my high school history teacher Coach Baker called it).
We all got to envision what it would be like to see Javi's mangled forearm amputated. We learned that as many people died during the first day of the Battle of Antietam as died in the 911 terrorist attacks
Woody, dressed as Dr. Letterman, explained why Letterman was so revered as a strategic medical officer and how his plan of positioning hospitals on the battlefield is still in use today and referred to as the Letterman Plan.
We learned when it was a good idea to bleed an ailing patient to rebalance the humors, how Jesuits Bark was useful in preventing Malaria because it contained quinine, and how you can use clove to numb a sore tooth. We even learned why the coarse horsehair used for sutures by the Confederates caused so much fewer infections than the fine silk sutures imported from China by the North.
Thank you Karl for arranging and participating in this presentation and thank you Woody for your time and sharing your knowledge with Crew 285!
