Horseback riding and overnight stay at Rancho Cortez, Feb 11-12, 2017
Record-breaking high temperatures for February made for an extremely pleasant mid-winter stay at Rancho Cortez located just west of Bandera in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
Rancho Cortez owner Larry either bases his character on Curly from "City Slickers" or the writers of that movie stayed at Rancho Cortez and developed the character based on Larry. Either way it was entertaining listening to Larry philosophize about everything from Catholic School nuns to Texas history and Charlie Goodnight.
He showed the youth how to throw a lasso, groom a horse, and ride a horse.

The ride on Saturday was followed by scratching the potbellied pig Tater Tot, a plethora of ranch dogs, miniature burros and goats. Then came a BBQ dinner in the dining hall and a campfire with guitar playing, singing, and s'mores. The Milky Way was out in splendor until the nearly full moon rose and lit up the ranch like a pale sun.
Some then relaxed in the Jacuzzi while others played a rousing game of Farkle back in the Navajo suite; our abode for the evening.
After a peaceful night interrupted by the occasional bleating goat we had breakfast in the dining hall and mounted up for a morning trail ride.
Then back to San Antonio for the weekly grind.
